FC Barcelona came out loud on their icon Lionel Messi’s FIFA Best Awards snub on Monday. The International Football Governing body announced the finalists for the FIFA Best Men’s Players where former Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, Croatian skipper Luka Modric and Egypt’s Mohammed Salah were shortlisted as the final three. Following the decision fans and social media overflowed with criticisms and congratulations.

Spanish football club Barcelona tweeted from their official handle, ‘No doubt for Barça Fans. He is the best. Period.’ Besides the Best Men’s Player, FIFA also announced the list of The Best FIFA Women’s Player, The Best FIFA Goalkeeper Award, The Best FIFA Men’s Coach and The Best FIFA Women’s Coach, reports timesnownews.com.

This is the first time since 2006 that Messi is not part of the list while Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah made it to the top three for the first time. Modric who bagged the UEFA Player of the Year a few days back in Monaco played a pivotal role in helping Real Madrid to a third straight Champions League title in May and then leading Croatia to the World Cup final in Russia this year. Ronaldo left Madrid after the consecutive third Champions League final win over Liverpool to join Juventus for £100 million this summer.

Salah, who had to be substituted early in the UCL final due to his injury, was recognized for his Premier League record 32 goals for Liverpool and 43 goals in all competitions last season. Messi, scored 44 goals last season for Barcelona and led his side to La Liga and Copa del Rey glory will be missing out on the podium on September 24 besides Kevin De Bruyne, Raphael Varane, Antonine Greizmann, Eden Hazard, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe. FIFA’s list also overlooked players that constituted France’s World Cup-winning squad in Russia this year.
