Bangladesh women lose fighting

Dhaka: Bangladesh Women’s team suffered second consecutive defeat in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 losing to former champions England by 36 runs in a Group-B match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Thursday.

This was the 2nd defeat for Bangladesh against England in their 2nd T20I after losing the first match by 79 runs in the last Women’s World T20 in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Bangladesh (91/5) made a frustrating start in the five-team Group-B after conceding a massive 72-run defeat against hosts India (163/5) at the same venue on Tuesday.

Chasing a target of 154 runs in the day’s match, the Tigresses folded their innings at 117 for 6 in quota 20 overs.

Going to bat, Bangladesh women’s faced initial batting jolt losing opener Sharmin Akhter for a duck in the last ball of the first over and their misery further deepened losing 2nd wicket of Ayasha Rahman (2) for 16 runs in 5.1 overs.

One down Fargana Haque and number four Rumana Ahmed helped Bangladesh overcome early damage scoring 19 runs each.  

Number five Nigar Sultana hit the team highest 35 runs off 28 balls featuring four fours and one six before being out at 110 for 5 in 18.4 while former skipper Salma Khatun remained not out on 30-ball 32 runs hitting four fours.

A Shrubsole claimed two wickets for 27 runs while JL Gunn, KH Brunt and D Hazell took one wicket each.  

Earlier, the former champions won the toss and opted to bat first and scored formidable 153 for 7 in stipulated overs against Bangladesh.

Batting first, England made a good start scoring 34 runs in 4.1 overs in the opening stand before TT Beaumont was clean bowled by Bangladesh skipper Jahanara Alam scoring 14-ball 18 runs hitting two fours and one six.

The English captain cum opening batsman made a half century contributing the team highest 60 runs off 51 deliveries featuring seven boundaries.

Besides, middle order NR Sciver (27), KH Brunt (17) and DN Wyatt (15) were other notable scorers for England reaching the double figures.

Jahanara Alam, who made the first breakthrough in England innings, grabbed three wickets for 32 runs while Khadiza-Tul Kubra, Rumana Ahmed and Salma Khatun took one wicket each conceding 15, 23 and 28 runs respectively.
