When Martin Guptill top-edged a Josh Hazlewood bouncer in ICC Cricket World Cup final 2015 against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the ball soared over Brad Haddin’s end out of the humongous ground for six. The shot also took his series tally to 545 — four ahead of Kumar Sangakkara’s 541. Guptill is now the highest run-getter in Cricket World Cup 2015.

Guptill had a sedate start to the tournament, his highest score from his first four innings being 49. He found form against Afghanistan at Napier, scoring 57, and followed it with 105 against Bangladesh at Hamilton and 237 not out against West Indies at Wellington (a World Cup record) in the quarter-final. He was run out for 34 during the semi-final against South Africa at Eden Park.

The most runs by anyone else playing in the final is Brendon McCullum’s 328. With McCullum being dismissed, Steve Smith (346) is the nearest — which means Guptill’s record is safe unless Smith scores a double-hundred.
