ECB security delegation arrives
Dhaka: A three-member security delegation of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has arrived in Dhaka on a four-day visit to assess the security measures ahead of England’s tour to Bangladesh, slated to begin on 30 September.
The delegation comprises of ECB security advisor Reg Dickason, Professional Cricketers Association (PCA) chief executive David Leatherdale and ECB's director of cricket operations John Carr, reports UNB.
After their arrival on Wednesday, the delegation was scheduled to sit with the High Commissioners of Australia and the UK.
The delegation will call on Bangladesh’s Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and meet the chiefs of local security agencies — Police, RAB, DGFI and BGB — at Home Ministry on Thursday.
The delegation will visit the Chittagong venue on Friday. Returning from Chittagong they will sit with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials including its President Nazmul Hasan Papon at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday.
Though a security delegation’s visit to a host country before any international cricket series or matches is a routine-work, this time it gained more significance in the wake of recent terror attacks in the country in July last.
Special security measures have been taken for England cricket team’s tour.
In an inter-ministerial meeting on 7 August, a security committee was formed with an additional secretary of the Home Ministry as its convenor.
BCB’s Media Committee Chairman Jalal Yunus said the board will facilitate meetings with other top officials too, if requested by the delegation.
‘If they want to meet any other top official of the government, we will get them the appointment,’ Yunus told journalists on Tuesday.
‘Terrorism is not an issue only in Bangladesh but in many parts of the world like London, Paris or India. But that does not mean sports will be stopped or hampered,’ Yunus added.
The English team is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on 30 September and will stay until 2 November to play three ODIs, two Tests and three practice matches in Dhaka and Chittagong.
The ODIs are scheduled to start on 7 October, while the two-Test series on 20 October.
