Walsh arrives to coach fast men
Dhaka: West Indies legend Courtney Walsh has arrived in Dhaka to take up his new position as Bangladesh’s pace bowling coach.
Appointed to replace Zimbabwean Heath Streak, Walsh will serve the Tigers in his new capacity till the next World Cup of 50-over cricket, to be held in 2019 in England.
The former West Indies pacer would replace former coach Heath Streak who served worked with the Bangladesh team for two years until May.
This will be the 53-year-old Walsh’s first major coaching role in international cricket, having retired from all forms of the game in 2001 as the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.
Although his final haul of 519 wickets from 132 Tests has since been surpassed by four others, only one of them, Glenn McGrath, was a fast bowler.
Walsh, who enjoys huge popularity in Bangladesh from his playing days, has performed a variety of roles since retiring from international cricket, including coaching and talent spotting work, especially with fast bowlers and mentoring teams.
He managed the West Indies Under-19 side, had been a bowling consultant for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and part of the coaching team for the ICC Americas Cricket Combine.
Most recently, he served as a selector of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).
