Dhaka: Temperamental former Bangladesh football captain Mamunul Islam Mamun has decided to hang his boot from national team after being dropped from the squad for the Asian Cup Qualifying play-off home match against Bhutan scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old midfielder submitted a letter to the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) today to convey his sudden decision. He said he felt insulted after being overlooked in Tom Saintfiet's team for Tuesday's first leg fixture in their backyard.

‘Until yesterday I knew I would play against Bhutan but today I heard that I won't. I have been serving the country for a long time as captain but the coach took the decision without having a word with me,’ he said. ‘I feel humiliated and so I've decided to step aside.’

Expressing his disappointment, Mamunul further said, ‘I was injured prior to the Maldives game and I was told to get prepared for the Bhutan match. I worked hard to get fit for this game. I have been playing for so long. He could have discussed this with me.’

Earlier, Mamunul made his debut in 2009 and was made the captain of the national team in 2013. He was among the four footballers who were handed down suspensions for different terms on charges of violating the disciplinary code during SAFF Championship.

Later, he officially apologised and returned to the team.
