Pitch favours spinners in 1st innings
Dhaka: The typically flat and dry-surface of Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong favoured the spinners of both Bangladesh and England to keep authority over the batters in the first two days of their first Test.
After the second day’s play on Friday, the Tigers’ (221/5 in 74 overs, at stumps) were trailed by 72 runs with five wickets in hand in the 1st innings against England’s 1st innings score of 293/10 in 105.5 overs where spinners of the both teams bagged 14 wickets.
England’s all the wickets saw the exit way by Bangladesh spinners while English spinners dismissed the hosts’ four batsmen out of five.
Bangladesh’s off-break spinner Mehedi Hasan Miraz became the hero on his debut for his utmost claim of 6/80 in 39.5 overs that felt heavier in the 1st innings of English side, opened innings with bat after winning the toss on day-1 for a 258/7 in 92 overs.
The 18-year boy from Khulna, Miraz rocked the giant England's heavyweight batting line-up, toppling Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Gary Balance, Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow to squeeze the visitors' collection on the first day-1 while dismissed the visitors’ last one - Stuart Broad - on day-2.
Besides, all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan picked up two wickets, including English captain Alastair Cook, his country’s record run-scorer, and dangerous all-rounder Ben Stokes. Shakib conceded 46 in 19 overs.
Another left-arm spinner Taijul Islam experienced wicket draught on day-1, however, got his form pulling Chris Woakes with the very first delivery of the second day and later dismissed Adil Rashid. Taijul conceded 47 runs in 24 overs.
On the other camp, English off-break spinner Moeen Ali opened his account for the side toppling Bangladesh opening batsman Imrul Kayes while the 2nd one genuine Test batsman Mominul Haque on the way to 2/66 in 19 overs. Conceding no run, Ali toppled these two Bangladesh’s top-order batsmen within a span of four balls of his very 1st over on day-2.
English team leg-break Adil Rashid and off-break Gareth Batty were the two other spinners took one wicket each in the first innings.
Ben Stokes was the only fast bowler showed the exit way to any batsman for the first time in two days, departing the Tigers skipper Mushfiqur Rahim.
