Vikings beat Victorians in BPL opener
Dhaka: Tamim Iqbal's quick 54 helped Chittagong Vikings get off to a flying start in the 4th Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as they downed defending champions Comilla Victorians by 29 runs in the first match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.
Chasing a target of 162, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza-led Comilla Victorians finished on 132 for 8 in 20 overs with number-4 batsman Nazmul Hossain Shanto top-scoring 54 (not out) off 44 balls, involving six boundaries.
Marlon Samuels scored 23 while Al Amin (14) and opener Liton Kumar Das (13) were other double figure scorers for the side.
Vikings Afghan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi's spin wizard shook the Victorians batting line dismissing four wickets -- Liton Kumar Das, Ashar Zaidi, Al Amin and Sohail Tanvir -- for economic 24 runs in four overs and was adjudged man of the match.
Dwayne Smith made the first breakthrough in the Victorians bating castle dismissing opening batsman Imrul Kayes (6) who was caught by Anamul Haque at 9/1 in 2.1 overs.
Dwayne Smith, Abdur Razzak, Tymal Mills and Taskin Ahmed took one wicket each for 21, 23, 28 and 31 runs respectively.
Earlier, Tamim Iqbal's 54 helped Chittagong Vikings post a target of 162 against the defending champions.
Sent in to bat first, Ctg Vikings played 20 overs to collect their figure of 161/3 spurred by the unbeaten 4th wicket stand of 60 in 6.5 overs between Shoaib Malik and Jahurul Islam. The 4th pair started from 101/3 in 13.1 overs and stayed till the end.
Shoaib Malik’s not out 42 off 28 balls witnessed two boundaries and two sixes while Jahurul Islam added not out 29 off 21 balls, including three boundaries.
In the 2nd wicket, Vikings skipper Tamim stayed with Anamul Haque for a partnership of 44 in 5 overs that carried the team total to 80/2 in 10.5 overs from 36/1 in 5.5 overs, before Tamim was fell victim of run out facing 38 balls featuring six boundaries and two sixes.
Number-3 batsman Anamul Haque stayed for 22 runs facing 18 balls, including two boundaries, before being run out to leave the ground.
Vikings faced the first jolt at 36 in 5.5 overs losing their opening batsman West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith (9) who was caught by Mohammad Sharif off Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim bowling.
Imad Wasim took one wicket for 22 runs in his four overs.
