Bangladesh-India historic Test kicks off Thursday

Dhaka: Bangladesh will face giant India in the one-off Test beginning at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, India on Thursday.

The match will begin at 10:00am Bangladesh time.

This is for the first time India are hosting Bangladesh since 2000 despite India were the Tigers’ opposition in their inaugural match after having Test status. India are also the last of the ICC full-member nation to host Bangladesh for a Test.

In their previous eight Test meetings, Bangladesh managed two draws against India. India visited Bangladesh in 2000, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2015 to play eight Tests.

In their last respective five meetings in the longest format cricket, India have four wins and one draw while Bangladesh have one win, one draw and three losses.

The big challenge for Bangladesh is to carry that limited-over competitiveness into the ultimate Test, playing well for five days in conditions unfamiliar to them. After beating England in a home Test, Bangladesh went to New Zealand and showed they had come a long way and could declare innings on just to save the trouble of turning up for a fifth day.

Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim is in the spotlight for an individual achievement as he is 78 runs away from reaching the 3000 mark as 4th player of Bangladesh after former national captain Habibul Bashar, Tamim Iqbal and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

The second-most experienced Bangladesh Test cricketer, Mushfiqur played 51 Tests in 12 years making his Test debut in 2005 while making Test debut in 2011, India skipper Virat Kohli played out 53 Tests.

On the eve of the match Mushfiqur said, “Shakib will be handy in these conditions and we also have Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan. They have to be at their best because we are playing against the number one team in the world.”

Virat Kohli said, “Both aspects (spin and pace bowling) we are doing well, that's why we are number one…we won't focus on the opposition. We know what talent they have but we won't think what they are going to do.”

Bangladesh XI (probable): Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque, Mahmudullah Riyad, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim ( captain) Sabbir Rahman, Mehedi Hasan, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed and Kamrul Islam Rabbi.

India XI (probable): Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (captain), Ajinkya Rahane, Karun Nair/ Jayant Yadav, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav.
