West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels is no stranger to confrontations, making headlines and generally making outlandish statements.

But even for the West Indian star, his latest declaration is impressive.

The 36-year-old has made the call that he wants to join the Pakistan army, with the Jamaican superstar saying he’s Pakistani at heart.

Samuels made the statements in a heartfelt video, saluting Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa for his role in the safety and security of the Pakistan Super League Final in Lahore.

That final was only the second competitive cricket match involving international players since Sri Lanka were ambushed in 2009 on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, but suffered from England stars Kevin Pietersen, Tymal Mills and Luke Wright — all teammates at the Quetta Gladiators — from withdrawing over safety concerns.

Australian duo Shane Watson and Brad Haddin missed out on the final when their Islamabad United getting knocked out in the playoffs — but it had been suggested neither was willing to take part in the final.

The final went off without a hitch, with Samuels’ Peshawar Zalmi thrashing the understrength Gladiators by 58 runs.

Samuels and his teammates met with Bajwa over the weekend, prompting him to film the video message.

“Thank you to the army for the way they dealt with the things, security was top class and couldn’t ask for a better security and system,” Samuels said in the video, which was posted by Zalmi’s chairman Javed Afridi.

“I have spent a lot of time with Pakistanis in Jamaica, they are all my friends and I am a Pakistani in my heart. So it didn’t take much time for me to decide to come to Pakistan.

“I am a soldier and I salute you General. I wouldn’t mind coming to Pakistan if I get a metallic badge on my shoulder.

“In Jamaica I’m a General — that is why I wear my army suit to Pakistan.

“I am just waiting for (the badge) on my shoulder. I just want to be a part of the Pakistan Army.”

Samuels is perhaps best known in Australia for his repeated run-ins with spin king Shane Warne.

The pair clashed in the Big Bash League in 2013, when Warne unleashed a verbal tirade on the West Indian during a match between the Melbourne Stars’ and Samuels’ Melbourne Renegades.

Samuels responded by throwing his bat at the champion leggie — and Warne indicated his rival was ‘loopy’.

“It’s not a war, it’s a game,” Samuels said at the time.

Perhaps he’s ready for the real thing.
