Wellington: South Africa were 349 for nine, leading New Zealand by 81 at stumps on day two of the second Test in Wellington on Friday.
Quinton de Kock made 91 and Temba Bavuma 89.
For New Zealand, Colin de Grandhomme took three for 52 and Neil Wagner three for 96.
