Bangladesh eliminated from final race of Emerging Asia Cup

Dhaka: Bangladesh Under-23s team made the exit from the ACC Emerging Teams Cup conceding a humiliating eight-wicket defeat against visiting Sri Lanka in the semifinal at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in Chittagong on Saturday.

Sri Lanka U23s chased down the target of 180 runs for 2 in 38 5 OVERS, after restricting the hosts at 179/10 in 49 3 OVERS where Lankan pace bowler Asitha Fernando completed a hat-trick mission taking Afif Hossain, Mominul Haque and Nazmul Hossain Shanto.

Sri Lanka U23s will play the day-night final against Pakistan Under-23 at the ZACS on Monday (April 3).

Pakistan Under-23 team (267/5 in 50 overs; Mohammad Rizwan hit 105*) confirmed their final berth crushing Afghanistan Emerging Team (144/10 in 31 4 OVERS) by 123 runs in another semifinal at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong on Saturday.

In the day's match, Sri Lanka U23s reached their destination riding on the unbeaten 3rd pair stand of 165 in 34.3 overs between opener Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka.

Sadeera Samarawickrama hammered 88 off 100 balls, including 10 boundaries, while Charith Asalanka fired nine boundaries and one six off 121 to add 83 runs.

Nayeem Hasan and Mohammad Saifuddin took one wicket each for 28 and 45 runs respectively in 10 and 8 OVERS. 

Among the Bangladesh U23 side batsmen, Mohammad Saifuddin stayed for top-scoring 41 runs for Bangladesh U23s while Nasir Hossain(38), Saif Hassan (32), Abul Hasan (23), Mohammad Mithun (15) and Yasir Ali (11) were the other double-digit scorers, the side batted first after winning the toss. 

Asitha Fernando was most successful wicket-taker in the innings grabbing four for 33 runs in 10 OVERS.

Amila Aponso, Angelo Perera, Chamika Karunaratne, Hasaranga De Silva and Lahiru Samarakoon took one wicket each for the side.

Bangladesh U23s stormed to semifinals stage of the eight teams meet as Group B runners-up collecting unbeaten five points from three matches, having two wins and playing tie match.

They started their campaign crushing Hong Kong by 8 wickets and secured another win against Nepal by 83 runs in the 2nd match, before a tie against Pakistan U23s in the last match.

Sri Lanka U23s confirmed their semifinal berth as the Group A champion collecting four points from three matches having two wins and one loss.

They started their campaign with a 35-run loss against defending champion India Under-23s, but back in the race with two successive victories against Afghanistan Emerging Team and Malaysia by 35 runs and by 205 runs respectively.

Defending champion India Under-23s and Malaysia eliminated from the race placing 3rd and 4th in the Group-A respectively while Nepal and Hong Kong placed 3rd and 4th in the Group B to finish their campaign.
