Dhaka: The momentum began from the World Cup. Bangladesh knocked England out of the World Cup with a sensational 15-run victory to make the quarter-finals. The World Cup journey of the Tigers was marred by a controversial umpiring in the quarter-finals against India. The entire nation submerged into despair after the loss. But things have changed upturned since then.
The Tigers ‘Banglawashed’ Pakistan with a 3-0 win in ODI series and sealed the next series against India with an exciting 2-1 win. The latest success for the Tigers came on Wednesday (15 July) when the hosts hunt down another cricket giant South Africa with an emphatic 2-1 win in a three-match ODI series.
After losing the first match, Bangladesh came back in the series with a seven-wicket win in the second match, and ensured the series with a nine-wicket win in the third and final one.
After the dominating win on Wednesday, the ace all-rounder of the team Shakib Al Hasan believes the success will continue in the coming years.
‘A berth in the World Cup Quarter-Finals. Series wins against India and Pakistan. And then comes this historic series win over South Africa. It's been a stellar year so far and there shall be many such years!’ Shakib posted on his Facebook.
Earlier, Zimbabwe were whitewashed at home, Bangladesh exceeded expectations by reaching the quarter-final of World Cup 2015 and now have series wins against Pakistan, India and South Africa in quick succession. The Tigers are on the cloud nine at the moment. The personal achievements have added more colour to the success of the team. For Shakib, it was an excellent day with ball in hand.
The turn in the wicket resulted the wickets of Du Plessis and Amla. The wicket of Amla also took Shakib to 200 ODI wicket.
With the wicket Shakib entered into an elite all-rounders’ club. He became the seventh ODI player to score 4,000 runs with 200 wickets.
Shakib entered the club along with Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka), Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq (Pakistan), Jacques Kallis (South Africa), Chris Harris and Chris Cairns (New Zealand). But, Shakib played less matches than his six predecessors to make it to the club.
