UK condemns attack on publishers
Dhaka: Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK Hugo Swire has expressed deep concern over another horrific attack on bloggers and publishers in Bangladesh and laid emphasis on protecting free speech.
‘Deeply concerned by another attack on bloggers and publishers in Bangladesh. Protecting universal free speech is vital,’ he tweeted on Sunday.
Earlier, the United Nations, European Union, the USA, Germany and France strongly condemned the attack.
Saturday, 31 October 2015, experienced two consecutive attacks on two publishers of the slain blogger Avijit Roy and two other writers by unidentified assailants within a span of less than four hours in Dhaka. Although the victims of the first attack, Ahmedur Rashid Tutul, Ranadipam Basu, Tareque Rahim, at the office of the publishing house Shuddhaswar at Lalmatia survived the injuries, Faisal Arefin Dipan was hacked to death hours later at Shahbagh’s Aziz Supermarket.
