Death toll from swine flu hits 15 in Myanmar
Yangon: Death toll from seasonal influenza A/H1N1-2009, also known as swine flu, has reached 15 in Myanmar as of Saturday, the Myanmar News Agency reported Sunday.
The number of confirmed H1N1 cases has climbed to 136 since July 21, prompting the response teams to speed up their field trip to areas where the infection rate is high, the Ministry of Health and Sports was quoted as saying.
Patients contracting with the virus are receiving treatment at designated specialist hospitals.
The virus can be treated from 95 percent to 98 percent, said Htay Htay Tin, deputy director-general of the National Health Laboratory Department, adding that the H1N1 virus is not mutated from the avian influenza virus.
Meanwhile, Myanmar's parliamentarians have put forward a motion urging the government to carry out an extensive awareness campaign to contain the spread of H1N1 virus, and stressing the need to introduce preventive vaccination against the epidemic.
Myanmar has also faced another influenza outbreak in the rainy season of July, namely H5N1 (bird flu), leaving 5,000 chickens culled. The bird flu occurred on July 26 in Dawei town, southern Tanintharyi region.
