Defamation case against Kamal Haasan for ‘Hindu terror’ comment
A case was filed against veteran Indian film actor Kamal Haasan in a court in Varanasi on Friday for his comments on ‘Hindu terror’.
The case has been filed under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that pertain to defamation, attempt to cause offence, intent to hurt religious feelings and to incite communal disharmony.
In an article in a Tamil magazine that came into public domain on Thursday, the film actor has observed that ‘Hindu right-wing groups have unprecedentedly started indulging in acts of violence’.
On Thursday, Haasan had said that right-wing groups that held dialogues in the past were now resorting to violence.
Kamal Haasan said, ‘Right-wing cannot challenge anyone saying there are Hindu terrorists because there terror has spread into their camp as well. Such terror activities are not going to help them in way.’
Haasan’s comments did not go down well with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Senior BJP leader Vinay Katiyar said that Haasan should apologise for the statement.
‘His mental state is unstable. He should be getting treated in a hospital. Politics of such defamatory nature is not okay. He doesn’t have any proof,’ he said.
Earlier today, another actor backed Kamal Haasan’s statement. Prakash Raj in a tweet asked ‘If instilling fear in the name of religion..culture..morality is not terrorizing..than what is it..’
The court has listed the case for hearing on Saturday.
