A teenage student who ‘never missed class’ allegedly threw her baby out of her window after giving birth in secret.

The newborn was found dead and wrapped in a bed sheet lying on ground beneath the building in Xi’an, capital of north-western China’s Shaanxi Province.

Teaching staff at the Xi’an Engineering Technology College, where she studies early childhood education, claimed they never noticed the girl was pregnant because she ‘had always been fat’, reports the Metro.

The student was said to be a resident on the fourth floor and she allegedly threw the infant out shortly after giving birth.

The child – whose gender has not been given – was found by a campus security guard but without vital signs and pronounced dead by hospital staff.

Footage showing the newborn on the ground circulated online. Xi’an City police investigating the incident said the young woman was in a stable condition and had been brought back to her family.

She told the authorities that she got pregnant in February but never told anyone. Neither her relatives nor any teachers at her school knew and did not suspect anything because she was always in class.

One unnamed teacher said: ‘One thing is certain: she is a good child. She never missed class.

‘During the eight or nine months [she was pregnant], it included the summer holidays in August and September, so if her family didn’t know, there is no way we could have.’

Another teacher defended the school’s situation: ‘The girl had always been very fat, so we couldn’t tell.’

The police have yet to reveal the identity of the child’s father but teachers said he was not a student of the university.

Investigators said they were now in the process of determining whether the infant died before or after being thrown from the dormitory window.
