Vijay Gokhale new Indian foreign secretary
India: Vijay Keshav Gokhale, a senior Indian diplomat, has been appointed to serve as the next foreign secretary of India for a two-year fixed term.
The present Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar will complete his tenure on January 28, reported Indian media on Monday, reports the UNB.
Gokhale, a 1981 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), was India's envoy to China, and recently is said to have played a noteworthy role in resolving the Doklam dispute.
He is at present secretary (economic relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs.
The appointments committee of the cabinet has approved Gokhale's appointment to the post, Indian media reported quoting an official order issued by the department of personnel and training.
Jaishankar was appointed foreign secretary on January 29, 2015 for two years.
He was given a one-year extension in January last year.
