Kolkata: A shocking rape case has been reported from West Bengal that has eerie similarities to the 16 December Nirbhaya gang-rape case that took place in the national capital in 2012.

As per reports, several unidentified men gang-raped and physically assaulted a tribal woman near Kushmandi.

The victim, who was admitted to hospital in a critical condition, had sustained injuries on her private parts.

The Mumbai Mirror reported that the men inserted an iron rod into the victim’s private parts while committing the crime. ANI reported that the victim was a person with disabilities.

As per details available, the incident took place on Sunday night when the woman (21) was coming back from a village fair in Kushmandi, reports Times Now.

The Mumbai Mirror reported that several men grabbed the woman and forcefully took her to a deserted location under a bridge. They then took turns to rape her before inserting the iron rod into her private parts.

The woman was rescued after local villagers nearby heard her cries. She was rushed to the government-run Raigunj Superspeciality Hospital where doctors carried out an emergency surgery. Since her condition continued to remain critical, the victim was referred to the Malda Medical College and Hospital.

The report quoted hospital sources as saying that the woman had sustained severe injuries on her vagina and a part of her intestine.

Dr Amit Dawn, Superintendent of the Malda Medical College, said a team of surgeons and gynaecologists has been instituted to monitor the woman’s condition.

West Bengal State Women’s Commission chairperson Sunanda Mukherjee has described the incident as “shocking”, and demanded that the accused should be punished.

Adibashi Samaj and Lok Shilpi Platform president Budhan Hembrom said if the accused are not arrested and punished, they will start a mass agitation.

While police have detained one suspect for interrogation, they have yet to figure out how many men were involved in the crime.
