The United Nations on Thursday again called for quick implementation of the report of the advisory commission chaired by Kofi Annan to protect Rohingyas and ensure their safe return to Myanmar.

The programme was jointly organised by the Foreign Ministry and Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) at the BIISS Auditorium in the capital.

Mentioning that UN has special attention to the Rohingya issue, Mia Seppo said they have constant contact with the UN team in Myanmar and regular exchange of information.

She also said they will support all efforts to take back Rohingyas to their own country.

In his speech, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque highlighted Bangladesh’s efforts in presenting a proposal on the UN Global Compact for Migrants.

He also mentioned Bangladesh’s relentless diplomatic efforts in adopting ‘New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants’.

The Foreign Secretary said a big portion of Myanmar’s displaced people have taken shelter in Bangladesh which a big challenge for the country, seeking more assistance from the world community in this regard.
