Kolkata: In what appears to be an act of honour killing, a man in West Bengal's Nadia district allegedly shot dead a teenager for being in a relationship with his daughter, police said on Sunday.

Rafiqul Sheikh has been arrested in connection with the murder of class 11 student Sajir-Ul Sheikh on Saturday evening in the Nakashipara area, police said.

Sajir had fallen in love with Rafiqul's daughter, who is a class 10 student, but Rafiqul never accepted the relationship.

On Saturday evening, Sajir had come outside Rafiqul's house to meet the girl.

‘He had come to meet me. Then he was shot from behind by my father. He killed him because we loved each other,’ said the girl.

Rafiqul fled the scene when the villagers rushed to the spot on hearing the sound of firing.

A profusely bleeding Sajir was taken to the Bethuadahari hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Rafiqul was arrested later.

The victim's mother, crying inconsolably, demanded Rafiqul be given the capital punishment.

‘He has killed my son. I want him to be hanged by neck till death,’ she said.
