40 killed in storms across India
At least 40 people were killed across India on Sunday as thunderstorms and rain swept north, east and south India. Violent dust storms, followed by rain and lightning toppled walls and uprooted trees. Eighteen people were killed in Uttar Pradesh. Eight died in Andhra Pradesh and three in Telangana, officials told NDTV. According to reports, nine people were also killed in West Bengal and five in Delhi NCR due to the storm. The weather office has said thunderstorms are expected across north-west India over the next 48 to 72 hours, as several weather phenomena, including western disturbances, converge, reports Indian news agency NDTV.
At least 10 persons, including five teenagers, were killed in lightning strikes as a Northwester accompanied by heavy rain lashed parts of the Gangetic West Bengal on Sunday afternoon, reports IANS.
While in Delhi, at least two people were killed and 18 others injured as a severe dust storm hit the city on Sunday evening, while air traffic and Metro service too was disrupted due to strong winds and accompanying rain, officials said.
Power supply was affected in many areas in Delhi and Gurugram in Haryana.
