A senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government of being either ‘helpless’ or ‘complicit’ and asked the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government of India to ‘revaluate’ its policy towards Dhaka, reports Economic Times.

Condemning attacks on Hindus and temples in Bangladesh,he said, ‘The last few years have seen increasing radicalisation and jehadi sentiments in Bangladesh leading to killing of Hindus, dishonouring of Hindu women and demolition of Hindu temples’.

‘Swamy said the recent beheading of a Hindu priest in Bangladesh was shocking and alleged it is quite clear that Prime Minister of Sheikh Hasina is either helpless or complicit at this anti-Hindu phobia in that country.’

Bangladesh has experienced a wave of militant violence in recent months, including a series of bomb attacks on mosques and Hindu temples, reports Reuters.

Some of the attacks have been claimed by Islamic State, which has said it is behind the killings in Bangladesh of a Japanese citizen, an Italian aid worker and a policeman.

In a recent attack, five or six attackers cut the throat of the priest, Jogeshwar Roy, 55, as he was organising prayers at the Deviganj temple near Panchagar, 494 km north of the capital, Dhaka, police said.

‘We suspect that they might be members of the banned Islamist militant group Jamaatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh (JMB),’ police official Humayun Kabir told Reuters.

The devotee who tried to stop the priest’s attackers was shot in the leg before the group fled, police official Kabir said. Police have not yet made any arrests.

The government denies that Islamic State has a presence in the country of 160 million people. Police have blamed earlier attacks on home-grown Islamist militants.
