The Hague, Netherlands: Chief UN war crimes prosecutor Serge Brammertz on Thursday welcomed the guilty verdict against former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, saying ‘justice has been done.’

‘Thousands came here to tell their stories and courageously confront their tormentors. Today with this conviction that trust has been honoured,’ Brammertz said in a statement, after Karadzic was found guilty of genocide and sentenced to 40 years in jail.

Appeal underway:

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic will appeal his UN war crimes court conviction for genocide, his legal adviser said Thursday.

‘Dr Karadzic is disappointed and astonished. He feels that he was convicted on inference instead of evidence and will appeal the judgement,’ Peter Robinson told journalists outside the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.
