Canberra, Australia: The historical Mujibnagar Day was observed on 17 April 2016 (Sunday) at Bangladesh High Commission, Canberra in a befitting manner in presence of all the officials of the mission and the Bangladeshi community in Canberra.

Messages of president, prime minister, and foreign minister were read out and then a documentary on the life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was displayed, says a press release of the commission.

In the discussion session, expatriate community took part and paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the four leaders for their immense sacrifice for the country. They discussed the background of Mujibnagar Day and highly appreciated their prudent leadership to form a Government within a short period of time.

High Commissioner Kazi Imtiaz Hossain recalled with deep reverence the great leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and paid tribute to the four leaders–Syed Nazrul islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Muhammad Mansur Ali, AHM Qamaruzzaman– and also millions of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for making Bangladesh Independent.

He mentioned that the formation of the Mujibnagar government and its pronouncement to the world at large on 17 April 1971 is really a red-letter event in our national history as it gave a true shape and constitutional perspective for making the dream of an independent Bangladesh a reality. The Mujibnagar government in April 1971 had a clear, unequivocal statement of intent that the elected representatives of the people of Bangladesh had taken it upon themselves to give shape and substance to an independent statehood for them. It was thus that the global community was left with hardly a choice that the war of national liberation could not be dismissed by treating it as a simple revolution.

The programme was concluded by giving thanks to all participants.
