Protesters in Nepal vent fury at govt for slow pace of quake reconstruction
Protesters in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu vented their anger and frustration on Sunday (24 April), urging the government to accelerate the speed of reconstruction and recovery in the wake of the massive 25 April earthquake in 2015.
‘The ‘Open the Gate’ march by protesters on a government compound in Kathmandu, called for the authorities to work alongside the people to help speed up the slow pace of reconstruction in the quake-devastated country’, reports Channel NewsAsia.
‘In response, the authorities opened the gates to the government compound to the protesters, which numbered around 200.’
‘They then held a minute’s silence to commemorate the first anniversary of the disaster.’
‘The 7.8-magnitude quake killed nearly 9,000 people and some four million survivors are still living in temporary shelters, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.’
‘The disaster reduced more than a hundred monuments to rubble and damaged another 560 structures, including many centuries-old temples and stunning royal palaces in the Kathmandu valley that used to attract visitors from around the world.’
