Dhaka: Japanese government plans to introduce bulletproof vehicles and modern safety equipment to ensure proper protection of its aid workers overseas, including Bangladesh, as terrorism has turned out to be a common threat everywhere.

The Japanese government has started renewing their thinking that safety does not come without costs, UNB reported.

Seven Japanese people were killed and one was injured in the terrorist attack on Holey Artisan Bakery at the city’s diplomatic zone, Gulshan, on July 1.

Meanwhile, a vehicle carrying Japanese aid workers in conflict-ravaged South Sudan came under gunfire earlier last month, but no one aboard was injured.

A group of four Japan International Cooperation Agency workers were travelling in a bulletproof vehicle in the capital Juba on the evening of July 8 when the vehicle was hit by gunfire, according to Japanese media.

The Japanese government is also urging foreign governments, including Bangladesh, to strengthen security measures for their aid workers.

On July 6, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Shinichi Kitaoka in a statement said JICA will continue giving top priority to the safety of JICA-related personnel and thoroughly assessing the situation on the ground in the places where they work.

JICA also remains firmly committed to contributing to the development of Bangladesh.
