Sex on the beach during Olympics news broadcast

Rio de Janeiro: Brief stories from the Rio Olympics on Friday.

Sex on the beach

A BBC TV presenter had to improvise when it looked like two people were having sex on a beach behind him during a live broadcast. Dan Walker, after a flood of messages on social networks, said to viewers: ‘We’re not going to zoom in but rest assured it’s not ‘that’. It’s just a hug... they’re reading a book in a strange pose.’ Walker later tweeted: ‘It’s live TV. Anything can happen!’

Running its course

A BMX rider totalled his bike halfway through a race and carried it across the line on foot — and still made the next round. The Netherlands’ Niek Kimmann, after a heavy crash in the quarter-finals, picked up his bike and ran when he realised he could no longer ride it. ‘It felt like slow motion, and I thought, ‘This is it, my first Olympics, and it is already over’,’ he told reporters. ‘I tried to pick up my bike, and then I saw my bike was in three pieces,’ Kimmann added. ‘I took my bike and ran all the way to the finish line. Then I tried to pull myself together.’ Kimmann’s quick-thinking saved his campaign, as with quick times in the other two heats and mishaps to other riders, he squeaked into the semi-finals — and ultimately reached the final, where he placed seventh.

Headline nudes

It’s an Olympics where anyone can compete — provided they’re not wearing any clothes. The Abrico Beach Olympic Games took place on a nudist beach in Rio, and didn’t look much like the ongoing, multi-billion Games centred at Olympic Park. Instead of packed stadiums, flash equipment and, most strikingly, clothed athletes, naked people spent a day racing each other and playing football and tug-of-war, according to the Daily Mail. ‘There is no point worrying about what you look like when you bend over to pick up the ball, getting embarrassed when you fall over with your legs up in the air or bothering about your bits jiggling as you sprint for the finishing line,’ organisers were quoted as saying.
