Modi likely to visit Bangladesh June: Indian media

Dhaka: Though there is no official announcement from either side, India media has reported that their Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit Bangladesh in June next and operationalise the LBA if it is ratified by Parliament by that time.
The Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) was signed by Bangladesh and India way back in 1974 followed by an enabling pact signed in September, 2011 when then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had visited Dhaka.
The budget session of the Indian parliament resumes on 20 April after the recess, reports DNA India.
A parliamentary nod through a constitutional amendment Bill is required for ratifying the boundary pact under which 161 adversely-held enclaves with an estimated population of 50,000 are to be exchanged by the two countries.
Quoting sources, the report said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who has been assured that the Indian central government will bear the cost of compensation and resettlement of people in the enclaves after the LBA is ratified, is likely to back the central government's fresh move.
In another report, Outlook India in a write-up said the constitution amendment bill to ratify Indo-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement is likely to be introduced in parliament in the second spell of its budget session with a major change by delinking Assam from it, apparently due to BJP's electoral calculations in the state.
