Chennai: A special bench of the Karnataka High Court, India on Monday acquitted former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram in the disproportionate assets case in which she was convicted and sentenced for four years’ imprisonment by a trial court on 27 September 2014.

Pronouncing the verdict, single-judge bench of Justice C.R. Kumaraswamy said all the charges on which Jayalalithaa was convicted and sentenced by the trial court were not sustainable and upheld her appeal.

However, celebrations broke outside All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary and former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa’s residence when the news of her acquittal reached in Chennai.

Party cadres jumped in joy and burst crackers. They chanted ‘Long Live Amma’ and distributed sweets.

Some smashed coconuts on the ground, as an auspicious sign.

AIADMK cadres had assembled outside Jayalalithaa’s residence since morning here and were waiting with bated breath for the court’s decision.

The court struck down the verdict given by a trial court in the Rs.66.65 crore disproportionate assets case in an appeal filed by Jayalalithaa.
