Rome: A Bangladeshi national who rescued a 55-year-old woman from drowning in the middle of the Tiber River in Rome last week was awarded one year’s residence permit by Italian authorities for his bravery.

The decision came up following the appreciation of his heroic effort in the Italian as well as the European media last week.

Sabuj Khalifa, a Bangladeshi national who has been living in Rome since 2008, risked his life by jumping into the Tiber River when he saw a woman being carried away by the strong current on 12 May.

Later, police took the rescued woman to a local hospital for treatment and Khalifa to the police headquarters in Rome as he did have the permit to stay in Italy.

However, considering his bravery, the authorities concerned awarded him with a one-year residence permit.
