Angry at Indian ruling party BJP's activist bounty on Mamata Banerjee's head, actor-turned politician Jaya Bachchan lashed out against Indian government on Wednesday, saying the Centre is commited to protecting cows while crimes are being committed against women.

"The government needs to take aggressive steps for the protection of women. You can protect cows, but atrocitities against women continue," said the Rajya Sabha MP on the last day of the Budget Session.

Referring to a BJP's activist Rs 11 lakh bounty on Mamata Banerjee's head, Jaya said, "how can such a statement be made against a woman chief minister? The environment is already unsafe for women."

Jaya's angry statements come on the back of a video showing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha member Yogesh Varshney threatening the West Bengal Chief Minister and calling her a demon, reported Indian media.

He accused Banerjee of orchestrating a police crackdown on a Hanuman Jayanti rally in Birbhum, alleging that people were beaten up in a lathi-charge by the police. He said the video made him feel, "if anyone gets me Mamata Banerjee's head I will give them 11 lakh."

BJP has since disowned and condemned the statement in Parliament.

The BJP government has come under criticism for not doing enough to rein in Hindutva groups that have been pushing noisy campaign to protect cows.

Instances of vigilantism have grown with so-called gau rakshaks accused of violence and even murder.

Earlier this month, a Muslim dairy farmer succumbed to his injuries after he was thrashed by vigilantes in Rajasthan.

Cows, considered sacred by many Hindus, came back into focus after Yogi Aditynath won a landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh in March, and launched a crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses.
