Indian Singer Sonu Nigam, who won the heart of people with his sweet voice, took the issue on 17 April morning by commenting on Azan playing on the loudspeaker.

He said the use of loudspeakers at any religious place is imposed religiousness.

So, Sonu Nigam was troubled by the Azan to be heard from the mosques near his house?

Supriya Sogale from Mumbai, who works for BBCHindi.com, did an investigation on the matter.

‘To answer this question, I reached Sonu Nigam’s house at 5:00am on Indian time on Wednesday. His house is in the Versova area of Andheri, and of course there was darkness at that time. Generally busy Mumbai’s roads were empty and deserted. The lights of the house of Sonu Nigam were closed and police cars were deployed outside their house. Two policemen were standing outside the car.

‘Other journalists like me were also waiting calmly to hear Azan’s voice from somewhere but nobody heard it. Slowly all the media workers left there. For about half an hour, I sat in front of Sonu Nigam’s house and waited for Ajan’s voice but there were voices of some vehicles passing through my ears.'

Inquiries revealed that there are three mosques in the area but all of them are 600 meters from Sonu Nigam’s house.

Benefit from Azan

Masjid’s trustee Mehboob Khan told the BBC, ‘Sonu Nigam has come here for two to four years and we have been here for 30-35 years ago, before anyone has not shown any problem with Azan. Azan’s voice does not go away.’

Mehboob Khan, who is hurt by Sonu Nigam, further says, ‘We are told that people are benefited from Azan, people can get up and work on time, Sonu Nigam is just spoiling the atmosphere, it’s just a publicity stunt.’

On the right side of Sonu Nigam’s house is the Madarsa Tul-Salai Trust and Madrasa-e-Nabwaiyahah.

Habib, who worked in the Madarsa Tul-Salai Trust, cleared that loudspeakers are not used in their mosque.

Publicity Stunt?

At the same time, Trustee Ghulam of Madrasa-e-Nabwayahah confirmed Azan on Wednesday at 5:00pm.

Commenting on the issue of Sonu Nigam, Ghulam Gazi said, ‘Sonu Nigam used to sing all the songs for the first time only in Jagaran. He has forgotten how many people have hurt him, this is only for publicity. Now all the new singers have come and now they do not get the songs.’

‘Why should I live without a Muslim?’

Lata Sachdev, who lives on a building named ‘Trishul’ near the house of Sonu Nigam, told the BBC that she never heard Azan’s voice all day.

At the same time, Kiran Wassan, a woman in the nearby building, says that she did not listen to the morning till today.
