Shameless is a performance art project about the social concern and views about shame by Ali Asgar. The project includes an exhibition and live performance at EMk Centre in Dhaka.

The first performance of this project was subjectified with ‘Shame and Erotica’; the second one ‘Shame and gender’. The third part is about understanding the connection between shame and sin.

The Project is not seeking for a deep theoretical understanding or explanation of Shame. Rather it is about how our body becomes a repository of shame, being associated with notions like desire, sin, associated gender roles, due to various social norms we are supposed to abide by.

As a performance artist Ali Asgar believes his body is the main protagonist of his performance pieces. He wants to give his viewers an intimate experience through sound, light and space transformation where they will experience a body as a live object. Asgar will also project some still image and video documentation of his previous performances from the project ‘Shameless’ along with a 12 hour long duration live performance.

Ali Asgar is a Dhaka based artist who focuses primarily on printmaking and Live Art. Asgar’s works talk about issues such as gender, sexuality and social taboos, often referring back to his personal conflict with the stereotypical Bangladeshi mindset concerning members of minority communities. In his work, he regularly uses his own body and self-imagery as a rudimentary element to walk the line between the reality and the artifice of self-analysis. Asgar earned a BFA in Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka in 2015.

Exhibition Hours: 28 and 29 February 2016; 11:00am —8:00pm

Live Performance: 28 and 29 February 2016: 2:00pm — 8pm

Where: Edward M. Kennedy Centre for Public Service and the Arts, MIDAS Centre, House 5, Road 27(Old), Dhanmondi, Dhaka
