‘Dhanmondi 27’ is a historic place at the intersection of Mirpur Road and Dhanmondi Road 27 in the capital.

With a rooftop view of Louis Kahn's marvelous architecture of Jatiya Shangshad (National Parliament), this space houses Lalon Shangshad, where many researchers, musicians, performers and enthusiasts have had the opportunity to meet Shadhus (saints) and Fakirs and learn from them about Fakir Lalon’s music, philosophy and spirituality, which is at the heart of this space.

A tiny metal signboard on a wall says, ‘Jibon Shikkha Pathshala (life learning school), this space has played that exact role for many, a school of life.

Freedom fighters, writers, poets, singers, musicians, performers, artists, filmmakers, photographers, journalists, architects, lawyers, judges, teachers, doctors, businessmen, have all been students here for decades. Its journey began 44 years ago, nurturing the free spirited.

Now it is time for deconstruction of the space, to say goodbye to the old structure, and welcome a new one.

‘Let us get together, reminisce, remember, and understand the role this space has played in our lives, and its contribution to the cultural landscape of Dhaka’, says a press release.

Began on 16 March through a prayer for the deceased ones who had been integral parts of the ‘school of life’ at house 380, 27 Dhanmondi, programmes which include multimedia exhibition, music, performing arts, and movie screening, will continue till 19 March.

The multimedia exhibition is curated by Joyanta Howlader.
