Dhaka: The 39^th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam to be observed on Thursday.

On this day (12 Bhadra of Bengali year) in 1976, he breathed his last at the then PG Hospital now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital. The poet was buried with state honour beside Dhaka University Central Mosque.

Different political parties, socio-cultural-professional bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes in observance of the Poet’s death anniversary.

The national hook-ups, Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television, and other private sector television channels and radio stations will air special programmes while the national dailies will publish special supplements marking the day.

According to a press release of Dhaka University, the programmes of the day will start with Quran Khwani after Fazr prayers at Dhaka University Central Mosque that will be followed by a rally of teachers-students-officers-employees of the university in front of the sculpture ‘Aparajeo Bangla’ from where vice-chancellor of the university will lead a march at 7-15 am to place wreaths at the grave of the poet.

Besides, Fateha (special prayers) will be offered at the Poet’s grave where a discussion will be held with the vice-chancellor of the university in the chair.

The programme of the ruling Awami League to mark the day includes placing of wreaths, offering of Fateha and doa at the Poet’s grave at 8 am.

In a statement today, Awami League general secretary and Minister for Public Administration Syed Ashraful Islam called upon leaders-workers of the party and its associate bodies to attend the programme.

Leaders of Biswa Bangalee Sammelon O Biswa Kabita Congress will lay wreath and offer munajat at the Poet’s grave at 8-30 am seeking peace of the departed soul of the poet. A poetry recitation session has also been organised there.

Bangla Academy will organise a solo-lecture session followed by a cultural show at its Poet Shamsur Rahman auditorium at 4 pm.

BSS Comilla Correspondent reports, Nazrul Parishad has organised a day-long programme in the district town, one of the Poet’s memorable places in his chequered creative life. The day’s progamme starts with placing of wreaths at the sculpture ‘Chetonai Nazrul’ in the town at 9-30 am. The other programmes of the day include discussion, poetry recitation session, rendering of hamd and naat and holding of doa mahfil.
