Dhaka: Police could not yet make any breakthrough in their hunt for the killers of former Power Development Board (PDB) chairman Khijir Khan even after two days into the killing.

No one was arrested till Wednesday evening in connection with the killing although a case was filed against six unidentified people with Badda Police Station on Tuesday night.

Victim’s son Ashraful Islam filed the case. Sub-inspector Aminul Islam of the police station was made investigation officer of the killing case.

Miscreants slaughtered Khijir Khan, 66, at his Khanka Sharif (gathering place of followers) at Gudaraghat in the city’s Madhya Badda area on Monday evening.

Contacted, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Abdul Ahad said they are yet to get any clue about the killers. ‘We’re trying to unearth the mystery behind the murder,’ the ADC added.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Wednesday said police and intelligence agencies have been hunting for clues about the killers of Khijir Khan.

The minister was replying to questions from reporters after attending a programme marking the National Rat Elimination Drive-2015 at Khamarbari of Farmgate in the city.

Asked whether it is not the failure of police to crack the Channel-i presenter Maulana Nurul Islam Faruqi killing case and similar other killings that occurred in the last several years, he replied in the negative. ‘Police and intelligence agencies have been working on it.’

Replying to another question whether Islamic militant groups were involved in those sensational killings, the Home Minister said militant outfits like JMB have been trying to raise their heads but failed as the government controlled them. ‘We continue our work in this regard,’ he added.

About the killings of two foreign nationals, Asaduzzaman said police and other law enforcement and intelligence agencies are trying to arrest the killers.

Italian national Cesare Tavella was gunned down in Dhaka city’s Gulshan area on September 28 while Japanese citizen Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur on October 3.

When his attention was drawn to Indian media reports that Jamaat-Shibir might have been involved in the foreigners’ killing, the Home Minister declined to make any comment in this regard before the completion of investigation.
