Dhaka: The 39th death anniversary of great national leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani was observed on Tuesday.

Different socio-political organisations observed the day with elaborate programmes, included placing wreaths at his grave, holding discussions, milad mahfils art competitions and poetry recitation session.

Bhasani, popularly known as ‘Majlum Jananeta’, the leader of the downtrodden, passed away on November 17, 1976.

Hundreds of people paid rich tributes to the national leader by placing wreaths at his grave at Santosh here.

Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party, National Awami Party (NAP-Bhasani),

Maulana Bhasani Science and Technology University, and Bhasani Smrity Sangsad and different other socio-political organisations paid homage to him by placing wreaths at his grave.

They also offered fateha there and prayed for salvation of Bhasani’s departed soul.

Though BNP every year holds a memorial meeting on his grave premises on the occasion of the death anniversary, the party this time could not arrange it due to intra-party conflict.

Bhasani was a popular leader in his fight against imperialism and oppression of Pakistani rulers. He led the historic Farakka March in 1976 to ensure Bangladesh’s due rights to the share of the Ganges River water.

Born in 1880 in Dhangara, Sirajganj, Bhasani gained immense popularity among peasants. He is regarded as the proponent of secular and left-leaning politics in present-day Bangladesh.

On the occasion, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia issued separate messages paying rich tributes to the memory of the great leader.
