A young man on Tuesday was allegedly beaten to death by members of a peace and discipline maintaining committee led by local Awami League leader Golam Mostafa in Jessore’s Bejpara, claimed the deceased’s mother.

The deceased, Dollar, in his twenties, was the son of the late Moslem Uddin and resident of the town’s Asram Road area.

The committee is locally called as Peace Committee.

Jessore Kotwali police officer-in-charge Ghani Mian told NTV Online that Dollar was in police list as there were several cases filed against him.

His mother Sakina, however, said that a neighbour informed her that Dollar was being ‘severely beaten by Mostafa’ and his people.

She also alleged that members of the peace keeping committee barred her from meeting Dollar and lied about sending him to hospital.

A witness said that the deceased was beaten with his hands and legs tied.

Pressed about the allegation, Shankarpur committee leader Golam Mostafa, who is also Ward 7 Awami League president, said that Dollar went to rob people at night and beaten by the committee members. Later he died in the hospital, he added.

Several months ago the committees were formed in different places in Jessore. These are mostly led by Awami League leaders.
