Dhaka: Alem-Ulema at a meeting in Dhaka on Thursday decided to issue a common ‘Fatwa’ (Islmic religious edict) against militancy with signatures of the country’s 1 lakh Alem-Ulema.

The decision was taken at a views-exchange meeting titled ‘Role of Islam in Eradicating Militancy: Bangladesh Perspective’ at the Police Headquarters.

Chairman of Bangladesh Jamiatul Ulema Parishad Maulana Fariduddin Masud will form a committee in this regard.

Addressing the programme, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque urged the Alem-Olamas to extend cooperation in the fight against militancy.

‘Militancy in our country at the budding stage now…we want to eradicate it right now with the cooperation of all,’ he said.

Maulana Fariduddin said those who have been carrying out militant activities are the enemies of people.

He urged all to abstain from spreading militancy at Waj Mahfils (Muslim religious gathering) through wrong interpretation of Islam.

A total of 14 Alem-Ulema spoke at the meeting. Senior police officials were present at the programme.
