Dhaka: Torrential rains continued for the third consecutive day on Tuesday across Bangladesh, including capital Dhaka, throwing the normal life into a total disarray.

At least four people were killed and four others injured in landslides triggered by incessant downpour in Lighthouse area of Sadar municipality and Kaimmargona area of Ramu upazila in Cox's Bazar.

Rain started coming down in many parts of the country on Sunday and it continued till Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Md Shaheenul Islam, an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said the intensity of rainfall across the country is likely to come down from Wednesday.

The Met office recorded 49 mm of rainfall in Dhaka in the last 24 hours till 6 am today.
 Besides, the highest 223 mm of rainfall was recorded in Chittagong during the period.

Some places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience heavy (44-88 MM) to very heavy (89mm or more) rains during the next 24 hours from 10 am today due to active monsoon, according to the Met office.

Due to heavy to very heavy rainfall, landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

Besides, the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No 3 as squally weather may affect those and coastal areas of Bangladesh.

In Chittagong, torrential rains for the last 3-4 days inundated many areas of the port city, causing immense sufferings to the dwellers.

In Bagerhat, incessant rain for the last several days has submerged many parts of six upazilas-Sadar, Rampal, Kachua, Morelganj, Mongla, Sharankhola and Fakirhat, rendering several thousand people marooned and intensifying their woes.

Aftab Uddin, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), said some 275 hectares of Aman seedbeds, 498 hectares of Aman paddy, 61 hectares of Aus paddy, 625 hectares of vegetable fields and 35 hectares of betel leaf fields were inundated by the rainwater.

The DAE has opened a control room in each upazila, he said.

The local Met office recorded 74 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till 6 am on Tuesday.

In Khulna, vast croplands of Aman and vegetables in different parts of the district went under rainwater.

Several hundred people of Rupsha, Paikgachha, Dakope and Dumuria upazila have been trapped in the rainwater for the last several days.

Besides, fish enclosures were washed away by the water, causing huge losses to the owners.
