Dhaka: Police on Tuesday foiled several freedom fighters and cultural organisations attempt to lay siege to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence demanding punishment for raising question about the figures of Liberation War martyrs.

Earlier, leaders and activists of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Muktijoddha Shangshad Command and other organisations assembled at the crossing in capital’s Gulshan-2 to besiege Khaleda’s residence.

The law enforcers resisted them when they move towards Khaleda’s house.

Facing resistance, the leaders and activists of the organisations held sit on protest on the spot and chanted slogans demanding Khaleda Zia’s punishment for her remark on Liberation War martyrs.

State Minister of Post and Telecommunication ministry Tarana Halim, Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee acting president Shahriar Kabir were also present during the sit-on demonstration.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia raised question over the figure of Liberation War martyrs while addressing a rally organised by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal on 21 December at the Institute of Engineers in Dhaka marking the Victory Day.

Without mentioning anyone’s name Khaleda Zia also said, ‘He didn’t want independence. He wanted to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan.’

On 23 December, a Supreme Court Lawyer sent a legal notice to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia asking her to seek unconditional apology from the nation for raising question about the figures of Liberation War martyrs.

On 24 December, Raihan Faruki Imam, a resident of Narail, filed a defamation case against the former Prime Minister with Narail cognisance court for her remarks.
