Bagerhat: The National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources and Power and Ports will stage a fresh long march towards the 1,320 MW coal-fired Rampal Power Plant site in Bagerhat on March 10-15 demanding cancellation of the project.

Committee member secretary Prof Anu Mohammad came up with the announcement at a meeting here on Thursday evening.

The national committee arranged the meeting at the district unit office of Communist Party of Bangladesh.

The long march will begin from the capital on March 10, Anu Mohammad said.

He said they will resist through forging a national unity and national awakening any move to destroy the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, by implementing the power plant.

Anu Mohammad also said they will hold a series of programmes in the current year demanding the cancellation of the power project. ‘The government will be forced to backtrack from implementing the power project in the face of movement.’

He said they will carry out campaigns across the country to muster support in favour of the long march.

Earlier, the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources and Power and Ports staged long marches towards the power plant site on the same demand.
