Janaza of Rangpur city ex-mayor Jhantu held

Dhaka: The namaz-e-janaza of former mayor of Rangpur City Corporation Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu was held at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad on Monday morning.
A guard of honour was given here to the late freedom fighter and also former lawmaker from Rangpur-1 constituency.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Awami League leaders, Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah, Chief Whip ASM Firoz MP, Whips Iqbalur Rahim and Atiur Rahman Atik, State Minister for Rural Development & Co-operatives Division Md Moshiur Rahman Ranga MP, on behalf of leader of the opposition in parliament Raushan Ershad, opposition whip Md Nurul Islam Omar placed wreaths on the coffin of Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu.
Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah, cabinet members, including Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and Cultural Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, Whips, MPs, officials of Parliament Secretariat, a host of well-wishers joined the namaz-e-janaza, said a handout of Parliament Secretariat.
Earlier on Sunday, Sharfuddin died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital at the age of 66.
Jhantu, also a former MP and an advisory council member of Rangpur district Awami League, was elected the first mayor of the Rangpur City Corporation on December 20, 2012.
