Domestic help’s death sparks protests
Dhaka: Local people staged demonstrations and blocked a road in Mirpur area on Monday carrying the body of a domestic help who was found dead in a multi-storey building of NAM Garden at Mirpur on Sunday, reports UNB.
Witnesses said local people took to the streets and put barricade on the road adjacent to Shewrapara bus stand at about 10:30am and staged demonstrations demanding the arrest of those responsible for the girl’s death, halting vehicular movement on Mirpur-Farmgate Road.
The demonstrators withdrew the blockade at about 12:00noon after police assured them of arresting the perpetrators.
However, the agitators again demonstrated in front of Kafrul Police Station and the building of the NAM Garden where the body was found.
Earlier, police recovered the body of Jonia Akhter, aged around 15years, daughter of Osman Miah, from the multi-storey building of the NAM Garden on Sunday.
Jonia, from Itna in Kishoreganj district, used to livewith her parents at Ibrahimpur. Osman Miah is a rickshaw-puller.
Victim’s mother, Fulbanu, used to work as a housemaid at a flat of the building. As she was sick, Jonia had been working there instead of her mother for the last several days.
Jonia went to the flat on Sunday morning to work as usual, and her body was recovered near the building after some time.
