Dhaka: Law Minister Anisul Haq on Thursday said Bangladesh Nationalist Party Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman will be brought back home through the Interpol for executing the High Court verdict pronounced against him.

‘If it’s not possible than a new agreement will be signed between the two countries (UK and Bangladesh) for bringing him back to the country, if needed,’ he said while talking to reporters at his ministry about the verdict.

Then minister said they will soon collect the certified copy of the verdict and legal steps will be taken after that for executing it. ‘A letter will be sent to the Home Ministry in this regard.’

Talking about Tarique Rahman’s case, Anisul said, ‘Tarique Rahman had been acquitted by a lower court. Later, the ACC filed a petition against the verdict and the hearing was carried out as per rules. Tarique didn’t surrender despite repeated orders.’

Besides, the Judge who had pronounced the order in the case acquitting Tarique Rahman fled to Malaysia with his family two days after the announcement of the verdict, he said.

Later, he was sacked as he did not join the office responding to the government’s call.

‘After today’s verdict, I’m saying that the HC verdict proved that the lower court verdict was not right and he has been proved guilty through the verdict,’ he said.

Earlier in the day, the High Court sentenced Tarique Rahman to seven years’ jail and fined him Tk 20 crore scrapping his acquittal in a money laundering case.

The bench also upheld the trial court verdict that had sentenced Tarique's friend and business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun to seven years’ imprisonment in the same case.

On November 17, 2013, a Dhaka court acquitted Tarique and sentenced Mamun to seven years in jail and fined him Tk40 crore.
