Dhaka: Lawyers of death-row war criminal M Kamaruzzaman met him at Dhaka Central Jail on Saturday morning, ahead of Sunday’s scheduled review petition hearing on the judgment upholding the death sentence against him.

Senior jail super of the central jail Forman Ali said five lawyers, led by M Sishir Monir, entered the jail at about 11:15am.

They spent about half an hour with Kamaruzzaman and got out of the jail at about 11:45am, added Forman Ali.

The four other lawyers are Ihsan A Siddique, Matiur Rahman Akand, M Moshiul Alam and Mujahidul Islam.

Sishir Monir said, ‘We have talked to Kamaruzzaman. He is physically well and mentally strong. He expressed the hope that the verdict in tomorrow’s review petition will go in his favour.’

On 1 April, the Appellate Division deferred the death-row war criminal M Kamaruzzaman’s review petition hearing to 5 April.

Earlier, the Appellate Division on 9 March had fixed 1 April for hearing on the review petition of condemned war criminal M Kamaruzzaman, also the Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general.

Kamaruzzaman filed a petition on 5 March seeking review of the Appellate Division judgment upholding the death sentence awarded by the tribunal for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

On 9 May 2013, the tribunal condemned the Jamaat leader M Kamaruzzaman to death for his crimes against humanity, including murder, abduction, torture, rape and mass killing during the Liberation War.

On 3 November last year, the Supreme Court upheld the verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal-2 that had condemned the Jamaat leader to death.

On 18 February, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 issued a death warrant for Kamaruzzaman after receiving the full text of the Supreme Court verdict that upheld his death penalty for his crimes against humanity during 1971.

On the same day, the prison authorities read out the death warrant to Kamaruzzaman.
