Hasan Ali war crimes verdict any day
Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 is set to pronounce judgement in the trial of fugitive Syed Hasan Ali for his crimes against humanity committed during the War of Liberation in Tarail, Kishoreganj, on any day.
The ICT-1 put the verdict on CAV (curia advisary vult, a Latin legal term meaning court awaits verdict), drawing an end to about six month-long hearing of the case.
‘We are keeping the date for pronouncing verdict on CAV’ said Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chairman of the three-member panel of ICT-1.
The first tribunal passed the order as advocate Abdus Shukur Khan, state-appointed counsel for Hasan, concluded placing his arguments.
Earlier on 11 November 2014, the tribunal indicted Hasan Ali. The tribunal framed six charges of crimes against humanity against the alleged Razakar commander, including genocide, murder, abduction and torture.
The ICT-1 on 15 September 2014, through an order initiated trial against fugitive Hasan, 65, in absentia and appointed advocate Khan to represent the accused before court.
A total of 26 witnesses including investigation officer Hari Debnath, testified against him before the tribunal. Prosecutors Mohammad Ali and Abul Kalam Azad placed arguments against Hasan on 15 and 19 April.
The tribunal on 3 April 2014 issued warrant to arrest Hasan, but the law enforcing agencies are yet to nab him.
