Dhaka: The flood situation has worsened in several districts across the country as many rivers continued to swell.

In Kurigram, over 5 lakh people have been marooned as flood situation in the district has deteriorated due to onrush of upstream water and incessant rainfall for the last 10 days.

The Dharala and Brahmaputra rivers were flowing 106cm and 88cm over the danger line respectively, said Mahfuzur Rahman, executive engineer of Water Development Board of the district.

According to the district administration, some 712 villages of 55 unions in nine upazilas of the district went under water due to overflow of water from the rivers.

Many roads have been submerged, snapping all types of vehicular movement across the district.

In Lalmonirhat, the Teesta and Dharala rivers were flowing 7 cm and 100 cm above the red mark.

Most of the low-lying areas along the banks of these two mighty rivers have been inundated, marooning several thousand people. About 400 metre embankment in Char Bairati area of the district fell apart due to strong currents, leading to the flooding of nine villages anew.

In Sherpur, the rise of the Old Brahmaputra water level has prompted erosion in Sadar upazila.

About 50 houses at Kulurchar Beparipara in Char Pargimari union of the upazila were eroded over the last two days. More than 100 houses have been inundated over the same timeframe.

In Manikganj, the Jamuna River is flowing 20 cm above the danger level at Aricha point.

Several hundred houses and establishments in 25 villages of Daulatpur upazila in the district went under flood water. A major portion of Shyamganj-Jafarganj road was ravaged by the water flow.

Besides, about 200 households have been eroded and 10,000 acres of croplands went under water over the last couple of days.

In Rajbari, the Padma River is flowing above 53 cm of the danger line, flooding the low-lying croplands as well as roads and establishments in Debgram and Daulatdia unions of Goalanda upazila.
