Flood tightens its grip in Kurigram, Faridpur
Dhaka: The overall flood situation in Kurigram and Faridpur has worsened further as the major rivers in the districts are flowing over their danger marks due to onrush of the upstream water and incessant rainfall.
In Kurigram, more than six lakh people have been marooned as fresh areas were submerged due to gushing of hill water from the upstream and incessant rainfall for the last 13 days.
Mahfuzur Rahman, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, said the Brahmaputra was flowing 81 centimetres above its danger level at Chilmari point while the Dharala 72 cm above its red mark at Kurigram bridge point on Saturday.
According to the district administration, some 728 villages of 57 unions out of 73 in nine upazilas of the district went under water due to overflow of water from the rivers.
Many roads have been submerged, snapping all types of vehicular movement across the district.
Shawkat Ali, chairman of Chilmari upazila, said 10 villages were inundated as gushing water broke a road at Kanchkol Bazar.
In Faridpur, the flood situation has deteriorated in different parts of the district as the water level of the mighty river Padma is rising fast in several points, leaving at least 50,000 people marooned.
The water of the river Padma was flowing 96cm over the danger level due to the onrush of water from the upstream and incessant rainfall, said Idris Ali, an official of Water Development Board (WBD) of the district.
Four unions of sadar upazila, four of Charbhadrason and three unions of Sadarpur upazila are reeling under the flood water, said Deputy Assistant Engineer Jahirul Islam of WBD.
Shibpad Day, primary education officer of the district, said some 28 educational institutions were closed as those were submerged by flood water.
The district administration has started to distribute relief among the flood affected people, said Executive Magistrate Rubayet Hasan Shiplu.
